Are you a mom who just can’t find the time to workout? Maybe you are a new mom and/or new to the Peak and are looking for mom friends….maybe you want to workout, but aren’t sure about putting your baby or toddler in a gym childcare…maybe you want to run your first 5k or train for a new PR…maybe you want a balanced Bootcamp style workout specifically for moms of all levels. I have one place that will deliver all of that and more! Fit4mom is a franchise right here in the Peak! What is Fit4mom exactly? Here it is…..
FIT4MOM is the country’s largest fitness program for moms, offering pre- and post-natal fitness classes for every stage of motherhood. FIT4MOM Cary/Durham offers daily Stroller Strides workouts, 8-week Body Back health & fitness programs, and 5k, 8k, 10K & Half Marathon trainings for moms in the Cary, Apex & Durham areas.
I actually have a little personal experience with Fit4mom as I’ve been the 1/2 Marathon run coach for the last few season’s and I’ve attended several of their classes as a participant. Here’s a rundown of all the classes Fit4mom offers as well as what to expect and what you won’t expect, but will probably happen😊.
First, Fit4mom is a national franchise started by moms and run by moms! Devon Barker is the mom currently running the Cary, Apex and Durham locations. AND, Fit4mom is expanding to Holly Springs and Fuquay Varina this month! The grand opening dates will be March 15th and 17th so be sure to check out Fit4mom Cary for more details. Devon is a great leader! She started taking Stroller Strides as a mom to 3 kids….two being twins…and took over as franchise owner when the current owner Jennifer Kedrowski had her third baby and started doing consultant work part time. Both of these ladies have put their everything into making their programs top notch! Jennifer built the program from the bottom up and Devon continues to grow so all area moms can have an amazing opportunity to workout in a safe and successful environment with fun and supportive women.
Stroller Strides is what you Fit4mom is known for! Stroller Strides is a workout designed around you, your stroller and child. In our area Stroller Strides takes place at area parks when the weather is nice and inside malls during the winter or when it’s raining. Stroller Strides classes always start with a stationary warmup where the instructor greats the class and usually asks an icebreaker question and introduces anyone new. This is the time to check out the moms who have kids similar ages to yours so you can stalk them the rest of class….or at least that’s what I would have done as a new mom. I would have thought we were both interested in fitness since we were there, so naturally if we had kids the same gender and age then surely we could be best friends, right?!! After warmup we take off in a stroller brigade and follow a course that you either walk or jog while stopping at 4-5 stations for strength and cardio. First, let me say that the whole class is performed at your current fitness level. Some will walk between stations while other moms will run. That is completely your choice always! The instructors are trained to offer many options at each station and are trained on all those fun things that can plague a new mom. If you have diastasis recti they can work around it…or hemorrhoids…or a C-section…if you have to stop to nurse…grab snacks…calm your crying child…ALL of this is expected and OK in Stroller Strides and the best part is you have a new group of friends empathizing with you. Back to stations! This is the fun “working” part for the mom and the just fun part for the kid. Each station is several minutes of strength, cardio or a combination of both. The cool part is while the moms are performing a cardio sequence they are singing a fun nursery rhyme or counting for the kids. Maybe a station will involve rowing with resistance tubes, and while doing rows the moms will sing Row, Row Your Boat. AHA! I know you were wondering how the kids stayed in their stroller happily for an hour and this is it…as well as snacks, books, ipads, bribes and threats, but seriously between the almost constant movement and the fun and silly songs the kids really do well. Harper was a little older when we attended so I always felt like she was slightly embarrassed for me….I’m not a mom who talks in voices (unless its my I mean business voice) or one who sings kids songs (I’m more likely to sing them Taylor Swift to sleep) so this was a side she hadn’t seen much of and I think she enjoyed it, but was also thinking I shouldn’t pursue this any farther than being a participant. Now that you know your kids will have fun, let’s talk about the benefits for you! YOU will get a really good workout in this class. I was skeptical if I would get a kick butt workout and I got said butt handed to me. You transition quickly between stations so you are constantly moving and you can work as hard as you are able at each station. I also have a thing for theme workouts and several classes I have attended have had a fun theme. The stations and interaction with the kids also makes the class fly by! Class always ends with a core focus and stretch and then the moms usually reward the kids with playtime at the park or mall. Many times there will be a structured activity or craft after class. We have a mom Amanda who will plan many of these activities as well as a monthly birthday celebration for the kiddos. There is also plenty of fun to be had outside of working out and sometimes without the kids with Mom’s Night Out, Holiday parties, and lunch out. This is not just a workout for moms, but a community of moms and the friendships built and support offered are really the BEST part…and the part you won’t plan for, but will offer the most reward!
Body Back is an 8-week results driven fitness and nutrition program. While Body Back is done without children in attendance it is still designed around a mom’s needs. Body Back is basically small group training with a bootcamp style interval workout and nutrition component. Participants meet twice a week for an hour workout designed to build lean muscle, strength and endurance. They are also loosely monitoring their food choices and getting more personalized attention from the instructor. I say all of this “loosely”. You are not expected to follow a strict diet and the workouts are still tailored with every level of participant in mind. There are some general measurements done at the beginning and end of the 8-weeks, but the focus is always on what is GAINED as far as balance, strength and endurance. I will say that the body composition results are also very impressive with Body Back participants, but it’s always the by-product of a balanced workout that works for everyone and the group support and not because of a hardcore and strict fitness and nutrition plan! Body Back workouts take place indoors early morning and later evenings so mom’s can attend while the kiddos are sleeping or with dad. I attended a Body Back workout once and it blew me away! Again, this is a fast moving and carefully designed workout. I loved it and this program works!! The next session starts April 4th so check it out.
Barre classes are all the rage these days and I can’t think of anyone more in need of a strong and balanced body than a mom! Stroller Barre is a combination of ballet, Pilates, barre methods, and yoga. One of the biggest complaints of every mom I know is lack of core strength since bringing our sweet ones into the world so Stroller Barre will help with strengthening from the inside out as well as helping those muscular imbalances brought on by pregnancy and LIFE. Your little one can again be happily entertained by a cute song while you plie your heart out. And then when you have to bend over for the 678,129th time or spend hours playing on the floor you can happily do so without a backache. This is the one class I have not taken and I’m very sad because my beloved neighbor Karen teaches so I know it is a great class!
I saved the best for last! Just kidding…I only think its the best because I have been lucky to be a part of this one. Running Mamas is just that…running mamas! This is a unique class to the Fit4mom family as not all franchises have this. Running Mamas is a training program for a 5k, 10k or 1/2 Marathon. This is truly a great program and perfect for ANY level of runner. We have turned walkers into runners and runners into better runners. Each program lasts 8-12 weeks depending on the distance and is composed of 1-2 group runs per week as well as a daily program to follow. We also hold weekly run clinics covering topics from nutrition to strength training. I’ve mostly coached the 1/2 marathon group. We meet Saturday mornings bright and early at the ATT for our clinic and group run. I facilitate a warm up and then we are off. My favorite part is seeing the friendships that are made and the goals that are reached. I’ll never forget one of our first group runs last year training for the Rock n Roll 1/2 Marathon. We had a short 5 mile run, and after one of the participants Julie said…wow, that was my longest run ever! I had a little moment of worry thinking was coming in terms of distance, but Julie trusted the training and had a great cross training base built up and by race day she had adjusted her goal finish time by 15 minutes (faster!) and she nailed it. Now, you will find Julie teaching Body Back classes. Love how she has come full circle and it’s common to see ladies crossing over into all the fit4mom classes at some point. I would love for you to join me for 1/2 marathon training! This year we are running the Raleigh Race 13.1 on June 4th. Training starts next weekend. Karen is coaching the 5k and 10k group. They start in a few weeks and we are all doing the same race! We will be with you every step of the way.
Definitely check out all fit4mom has to offer! You are welcome to try a free class anytime, and check out FREE WEEK for Stroller Strides coming in April. Devon is amazing and always accessible for questions. I can’t even say enough about the community of moms, but I would have loved something like this a new mom. With classes in Apex, Durham, Cary, and soon Holly Springs and Fuquay Varina there is a location and class for everyone. Happy Strolling:)
